🚔 Here’s the verdict on cops in schools

July 5, 2023

Good morning, Denver! I hope you enjoyed the July Fourth festivities yesterday! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming 📰

What's CITY Talking About?

💚 CO Healing Fund Releases More Money to Club Q Victims

The Colorado Healing Fund — a nonprofit that collects and distributes money for the victims of “mass casualty crimes” — said it will pay an additional $800,000 to Club Q shooting survivors and families of the victims. This payment follows criticism from fund recipients and victim advocacy groups that say CHF’s distribution model (to keep 10% of funds raised for operational costs) is unethical. Recipients have also noted issues accessing their funds and poor communication from CHF. [CPR]

🏫 DPS Unveils New Safety Plan

Denver Public Schools superintendent Alex Marrero released the final draft of a brand new safety plan for the district. The big change: School Resources Officers — which were banned from DPS campuses in 2020 — will return to 13 DPS middle and high schools. The district also has plans to roll out youth violence meetings, develop stronger intervention protocols, and conduct safety audits, among other new initiatives. Marrero indicated that the plan would continue to evolve with the district’s needs. [Chalkbeat]

Denver Chatter

Hey loyal reader, what’s been on your mind lately? 🤔

🎪 Regarding the news that the Barnum-Ross library branch is considering a new name because of namesake P.T. Barnum’s controversial past, Deborah S. adds:

  • “I saw the DCPA's Chinese Lady this year. She was part of a Barnum sideshow, and the play implies that she was not paid. Ugh!”

🎟️ Following our recent podcast episode about local tourist traps vs. tourist treats:

  • 🦁 Ben R. agrees that the Denver Zoo is awesome! “We love the zoo! Additionally, wanted to mention that every weekend this summer, the zoo is open until 9 p.m., and it’s only $5 to get in after 5 p.m. Cooler temps and cheaper prices. It’s a win/win!”
  • 🦬 Marie M. wants to seconds our rec for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge: “I take any out-of-towners there. I love to see the bison and prairie dogs! The information in the tourist center is phenomenal and so informative! We’ve hiked all the trails and enjoyed the lakes. It’s a hidden gem!!”
  • 🪦 Steve G. had this tidbit to share regarding the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave: “There is some dispute over whether Buffalo Bill is actually buried up above Golden.”
  • 🪙 Megan K. wants to add the Denver Mint tour to the list: “One of only four mints in the U.S. You need to line up early for same-day tickets. But it’s a great addition to a day downtown.”
  • ⛰️ Danielle L. shared the itinerary for her own “kitschy Colorado” bachelorette trip, which included Morrison’s Tiny Town, the Sasquatch Outpost in Bailey, and South Park City in Fairplay!

Mortified Live: Confessions of a ‘90s Denver Teen

Did you keep a diary as a teenager? City Cast Denver podcast host Bree Davies sure did, and she recently got on stage in front of a room full of strangers to read aloud excerpts from her own angsty teenage journals at a local Mortified event. It's part stand-up comedy, part confessional, and we recorded all of it for your entertainment. Enjoy!
