🚫 Coffee shop boycotted over anti-gay stance
June 6, 2023

What's CITY Talking About?
🏠 Denver Evictions Hit Record-Breaking Level
With the cost of rent way up and the availability of emergency rental assistance way down, local eviction filings have spiked. According to city data, there were more eviction filings in May (1,216) than there have been in any other month in the past five years. Housing advocacy organizations say that number doesn’t include the households that self-evict under landlord pressure. [Denverite]
🚫 Controversy Brewing Over New Coffee Shop
The Drip Café had its grand opening in the Art District on Santa Fe last Friday, but prospective patrons were met by protesters calling attention to its parent company’s views on the LGBTQ community. Anti-queer language on the company’s website sparked an uproar on local social media, prompting calls for a boycott. The company has since altered the language on its site, and the shop’s owner told Denver7 that their Christian faith tells them to “love everybody.” [Denver7]

🚩 Club Q Victims to Sue El Paso County
Victims of the mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs last November — which killed five and physically injured 17 — have announced plans to sue El Paso County for failing to invoke the state’s “red flag” law. The shooter, currently facing hundreds of criminal charges and scheduled for a June 26 arraignment, was previously arrested for an incident in 2021 involving firearms. Plaintiffs argue that by way of the red flag law, county law enforcement should have taken the shooter’s weapons at that time, but never did. [Colorado Springs Indy]
