What's CITY Talking About?
🚲 A Newer, Better Way To Protect Your Bike
Last week, city officials debuted 529 Garage, a new digital bike registration and tracking platform that will replace the police department’s decades-old system. The new platform promises to reduce bicycle theft in Denver and help locate and return stolen bikes to their proper owners. Signing up is free and can be done through DPD’s website or the 529 Garage app. [Denverite]
⚖️ Family Of Slain DPS Student Sues District
The family of Luis Garcia, the East High student who was fatally shot outside of the school in February, is filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the school district, alleging negligence and failure to protect students. The lawsuit also cites the “willful and wanton removal” of police from the school, something that has been at the center of heated controversy for the district and its school board. [Denver Post 🔒]
- 👀 Related: DPS Superintendent Alex Marrero just released the first draft of a new district safety plan, but Denver’s Black and Brown families believe the plan is mostly catering to white students. [Westword]
- 🎧 Hear from the students: We sat down with two student advocates from East High School back in March to talk about the issue of gun violence in schools. [City Cast Denver 🎧]
🛏️ Another Pandemic Shelter Is Shuttered
The city is closing yet another pandemic-era, non-congregate, 24-hour shelter. The Rodeway Inn Motel has been offering housing to women, transgender people, and non-binary people experiencing homelessness since the peak of COVID-19 in 2020. The city will work to find other housing options for the motel’s current 70 residents before it closes in August. [Denverite]

Help Your Neighbor

Hundreds of South American migrants seeking asylum arrived in Denver last week as the Title 42 immigration policy expired on Friday. That’s on top of the more than 9,000 that have arrived here since December. Mayor Hancock is calling on the feds for more financial support, as well as on local nonprofits for assistance providing shelter and other essential resources for the new arrivals. Here’s how you can help:
🧼 Beginning tomorrow the Denver Dream Center is collecting essential hygiene and personal care items.
🛍️ The Potters House Church of Denver will begin accepting donations next week, May 22. Email [email protected] if you’re interested in helping.
💰 The Rose Community Foundation is taking financial donations for its Newcomers Fund. Money collected will go directly to the city’s nonprofit partners that are supporting the migrants.
🚗 Here are city resources for incoming migrants to help with shelter, transportation, communication, and more.
